When a Woman Ascends the Stairs

Keiko, affectionately known as Mama, tells her story: she's a Ginza hostess, 30, and a widow. She describes life's vicious cycle: acting cheerful in the presence of drunks, dressing and living well to convey confidence, needing money for these expenses as well as for her demanding mother and brother, and knowing she's getting older. She's reached the age when she must choose between seeking marriage (difficult given her tarnished occupation), being a kept woman, and borrowing money to open her own bar. Each path has its drawbacks, such as investors who expect a return on their loans. Keiko exudes a quiet dignity that attracts men, but are they all they seem? Does she have any options?
