The Trial

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment and removal from office in 2016 were precipitated by a corruption scandal implicating, among others, her then-vice-president Michel Temer. Maria Augusta Ramos watches Rousseff's trial from the defense team's perspective. This is a slow-burning courtroom drama: the many parties' appearances eventually transform the proceedings into something similar to theatre. Grand emotions are amplified within the courtroom, as lobbyists and fans pace the corridors on the other side of the doors. Meanwhile, demonstrators outside, in front of Brasilia's futuristic government buildings, are shouting in the style of a Greek chorus. Only the protagonist, Rousseff, maintains a professional and detached demeanor.
