Double Suicide of Sonezaki

In Japan, suicide has traditionally been a means of social protest. The development of a new merchant class transforms samurai society in this film, which takes place in 1703. Some unscrupulous persons took advantage of these shifts before the social order was re-created, as elements of the social compact began to unravel. A rich merchant gives his clerk an I.O.U. instead of wages in this story. When the destitute clerk gives the paper to the merchant for payment at the agreed-upon time, the merchant becomes enraged and claims that he never wrote it and that the clerk is attempting to scam him. He then orders his thugs to beat up on the cashier.
