Dolls

Dolls takes puppeteering as its overriding motif the type practiced in Bunraku doll theater performances -- opening each section of his film with a story that relates to the activity offered by the live characters. Chief among those stories is the story of Matsumoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and Sawako (Miho Kanno), a couple whose relationship is about to be divided apart from the former's parents, who have insisted that their child take part in an arranged marriage to his boss' daughter. He initially insists, causing the unstable Sawako to become devoted to a psychiatric hospital. However, he understands she is therefore not capable of caring for herself she needs to become tied with a rope when he leaves his bride at the altar to save Sawako. Inextricably bound, both wander through Japan, encountering others across the way who've missed love for more fleeting pleasures: money, fame, power.
