Chronicle of a Passion

After World War I, Renier, who was a widower, went back to his land in Horlebecq. His only way to pass the time is to write to Rolande, a Parisian he met during the war. Even though his family wants him to marry Emily, his brother's sister-in-law, Renier is still obsessed with Rolande and even goes to Paris to see her. She convinces him to put a lot of money into the Parisian "Academie de Beauté." The tensions at Horlebecq are unbearable because of his risky investments and the fact that he broke off his engagement with Emily.
