Laura Brummels is motivated to avenge a young boy's death, which she could have averted but did not. It has imprisoned her in a jail of guilt as a result of her cooperation as a journalist with a corrupt political administration. Laura is sentenced to Aquila for falling out of favor with the dictatorship, where no one escapes and an annual monsoon floods the prison, killing everyone. And she realizes she has a chance to atone for her actions: one of the notorious guards is the small boy's murderer. This is her opportunity to revenge the boy's death while also absolving herself of her guilt. But there's a surprise waiting for her in the huge cell she's been assigned: another prisoner, Joseph, has survived the previous flood and has been plotting his escape from Aquila before the new one arrives. He's figured out a smart way to get the stones off the prison ceiling, but he can't accomplish it alone. To succeed, he must persuade his new cellmate to forego murder in favor of surviving and escaping with him.
