John Mills plays a farmer who enjoys a drink, but his farm is in disrepair. He meets Dulcima, a young girl who takes pity on him and becomes his cleaner. He is relieved to have some company, and she needs to work to earn money. He falls for her, but things become complicated when she begins seeing the gamekeeper. However, she discovers the farmer is a very wealthy man and decides she still wants to be with him, but she can't stop seeing the gamekeeper...and the farmer discovers this.
