Machisu is an artist who paints. He has never achieved the level of success he believes he is entitled to. Regardless, he is constantly striving for success. Despite the setbacks, his wife Sachiko continues to support him. Machisu, the only son of a wealthy collector, has a childlike enthusiasm for art. Praise from his father's famous artist friend inspires the young boy to aspire to be a painter himself. Machisu, a poor loner, manages to attend art school as a young man using money earned from working. He is introduced to a world of unconventional bold creativity, but he also receives his first taste of harsh criticism from a dealer. Encouragement comes in the form of attractive clerk Sachiko, who believes she is the only one who understands him. Machisu's marriage is soon followed by the birth of a daughter, as love and hope drive him to devote himself even more deeply to his art...
